Life Updates: Back to School, Online Classes, Campus Chatter

michaelaaac.

Heyyyy y’all,

Happy September! As we go into this new month I pray that it brings you everything August neglected to. May your prayers be answered and your blessings find you. Stay positive, stay informed and stay SAFE.

So - It is the second full week and may I just say.. this has been one eventful semester. From a rise in COVID-19 numbers to complications with online classes to protests… there is no rest!

First things first. Before the semesters started, I was set to have 2 in person classes, two hybrid courses (meeting once a week rather than twice a week), and one class that was completely online. However, after going on campus the first day, I felt it would be a better idea to go ahead and make all of them online. The cases seen on campus were beginning to raise, and I don’t want to be struggling to adjust in the middle of the semester again like Spring 2020. This way, I can go ahead and get used to the format and call it a day!

They are going well so far. I have been able to stick to a routine and get everything done. One thing I like about having my classes completely online is I have to hold myself accountable for my work. No one will do that for me. It can be a lot to keep up with but staying organized helps.

Also - I moved into my new apartment! I love it so far and my roommates are amazing. My favorite space so far is my bed, lol. I still have a few things I want to get but it will come together eventually.

Since we’ve been back on campus, the numbers for reported COVID-19 cases have jumped exponentially. Some houses in Greek Village have been put under quarantine. The school is offering testing that gives same day results, so that’s nice. I guess everyone is just trying to do the best they can right now. However, yesterday someone wrote on the side of Russell house addressing the University president saying “Mr Caslen Shut it down 600+ Sick,?? Must Die?” in response to the rise in numbers. What a nice way to start the week!!

Aside from Corona, there has been a lot of political unrest impacting the student body. There was an

Anti-Black Lives Matter protest on Greene Street the second day of classes and another one put on by some hyper-conservatives the next week near the library. I knew this semester was going to be interesting being at THE state university in the capital of a red state in the south during election year… but whew chile. Huge shout out to the students who protested back. Thank you.

How's everyone else's year going so far? :))))))
